Matilda’s rescue began when a group of young people noticed her condition and contacted Tina Solera, founder of Galgos del Sol Animal Rescue. Tina, who was in the area, quickly responded to help.
The rescue proved challenging, as Matilda was understandably frightened and defensive. With patience and the assistance of the same young people who had called for help, the team was able to safely transport Matilda to receive medical attention.
“The experience was emotionally demanding,” Tina shared on social media. “But I’m grateful for the brave young people who helped. Hopefully, they’ll become advocates for galgos.”
At the veterinary hospital, Matilda received comprehensive medical evaluation and treatment. She was found to be severely underweight, dehydrated, and suffering from tick-borne illness. The medical team provided fluids, medication, and conducted thorough examinations to assess her overall health.
Fortunately, no major injuries were discovered, and Matilda began showing positive signs of recovery within days. Her treatment included proper nutrition, hydration therapy, and medication for her tick-borne illness.
As Matilda’s physical health improved, small but meaningful milestones marked her emotional healing. The first time she wagged her tail represented a significant step forward in her recovery journey.
“She’s still building confidence, but each day brings small improvements,” Tina observed. The combination of medical care, proper nutrition, and patient handling helped Matilda begin to trust humans again.
Galgos del Sol Animal Rescue originated from Tina’s life-changing encounter with a stray galgo. Today, the organization operates as a registered charity in Spain, the UK, and the US, dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming galgos, podencos, and mixed breeds.
The organization currently provides care for approximately 150 dogs, offering them medical treatment, rehabilitation, and the opportunity to find loving permanent homes.
Matilda’s story demonstrates the impact that dedicated rescue organizations and compassionate individuals can have on animal welfare. Through proper veterinary care, patience, and understanding, dogs like Matilda can overcome difficult circumstances and find new hope.
